Sonicwall.com - SGMS 2.5 Review
GMS 2.5, the latest version of SonicWALL's award-winning Global Management System software, is set to launch publicly on June 23rd with worldwide availability scheduled for July! SonicWALL GMS 2.5 offers numerous features and benefits that enable service providers and distributed enterprises to manage anywhere from a few to thousands of SonicWALL Internet security appliances, all from a central location.

SonicWALL GMS 2.5 provides:

Visual Tool Manager. A visualization tool providing a detailed, graphical map of the GMS security management deployment, including the GMS database, GMS Console, GMS Agents, remote managed SonicWALL appliances and the primary and back-up management tunnels. (Note: This is an optional upgrade.)

VPN Monitoring.

  • Provides visual status notification of the site-to-site VPN tunnels.
  • Displays traffic statistics of the site-to-site VPN tunnels such as "create time," "tunnel valid until," and "in and out packets/bytes."
  • Displays whether or not the dial-up or broadband connection is active for the SonicWALL TELE3 SP. Also display status of HA units.
Additional Monitoring Enhancements.
  • GMS alerts and notifications can be scheduled to be sent to one or more administrators and operators at specified times, allowing them to share the responsibility of addressing GMS issues during their work shift.
  • SNMP traps can now be forwarded to up to four (4) SNMP Managers.
Message of the Day (MOD). GMS administrators can write up important notices about GMS and the remote managed SonicWALL appliances and share the information with the operators and other GMS users.

Group Policy Filtering. Support for a filtering mechanism to select a set of group policies and settings to be imported to the managed SonicWALL appliances.

Firewall Diagnostics Tools. Support for exposing the firewall diagnostics tools available in the SonicWALL appliances to the GMS user interface (UI), allowing administrators to troubleshoot firewall and network problems remotely.

Centralized Reporting Enhancements. Enhancements for increased reporting, flexibility and scalability.

  • In a distributed environment, summarization of reports can now be distributed among the GMS Agents, improving scalability and overall performance of GMS reporting.
  • Support for a tool to easily customize the reporting templates.
  • Support for including all archived/emailed scheduled reports in a single file.
  • Support for archiving/emailing scheduled reports specified for a range of day.
  • Scheduled reports can be zipped (password protected) and then archived/emailed.
Command Line Interface (CLI) Enhancements. Support for using CLI scripts to accomplish the following:
  • Firmware upgrade Adding/deleting GMS users
  • Changes to the properties of GMS users (i.e., password)
  • Ability for any GMS user to log in to CLI
  • Deletion of units
Installation Improvements. For the Windows/SQL Server environment, the Phase 2 Installer is now launched automatically at the end of the Phase 1 Installer, simplifying installation and eliminating any errors caused by not running the Phase 2 Installer.

Other Improvements. Enhancements for increased reporting, flexibility and scalability.

  • Support for pop-up information on currently logged-in sessions
  • Can now specify FQDN (instead of IP addresses) for hubs in Interconnected mode SAs
  • Prefs files for the GMS gateways are now automatically saved
  • Ability to view units based on Up/Down/Provisioned status
  • Can assign a specific firewall password at the Group level
Support for Global VPN Client (GVC). Support for configuring the GVC user policies in the SonicWALL VPN gateways that are under GMS management. This also includes support for registering and managing the GVC user licenses. GMS 2.5 also allows the administrators to export and email the GVC user policies in .rcf format to the remote VPN Client users.

Support for SonicWALL's Content Filtering Service (CFS). Support for configuring SonicWALL CFS in the remote managed SonicWALL appliances. This also includes support for registering and managing SonicWALL CFS licenses.

Support for SonicWALL SOHO TZW. Support for central management and monitoring of the remote SonicWALL SOHO TZW. This also includes support for registering and managing the wireless appliance and its security services.

Support for New Firmware 6.4.2.0 and 6.5.0.0 Features, and SonicOS 1.0. Support for SonicWALL firmware 6.4.2 and 6.5. Support for SonicWALL SonicOS 1.0.
